Military Life

The Picture below is Pvt Baluks draft card he registered on June 30 1942. When he died he was a Pvt serving in the 331st infantry 83rd divison. As a Pvt, Baluk was at the start of the military ladder and never got the chane to even climb it for he went Mia July 19 1944 then his body was found and was buried August 4 1944 in the Noramndy American Cemetary. His resonsibilities as a Private involved,  following orders to the best of his ability. Soldiers were provided with clothes, boots, weapons and a personal kit, including water-bottle, ammunition pouches, entrenching tool, groundsheet and haversack containing mess-tin, tinned rations, extra iron rations, spare socks and laces.

The 83rd Division insignia consists of a monogrammatic design in gold spelling out the word "O-H-I-O" on a black triangular background. The insignia was selected during World War I because the division contained mostly Ohio draftees. The 83 Divison was called the Thunderbolt Division. The Thunderbolt Divison landed on Omaha Beach two weeks after D-Day and were a major force in the war. They by end of September 1944 they had moved into Luxembourg which was controled by Nazi regim at the time. Pvt Baluk sadly died before this happened.
